Distilled alcoholic beverages that are labelled “Whisky” in India are blends derived from neutral spirits which are distilled from fermented molasses with only a small portion consisting of traditional malt whisky usually about 10 – 12%. Ninety percent of the whisky consumed in India is molasses based.

Amrut Distilleries launched Amrut, the first single malt to be made in India in 2004 & John Distilleries launched Paul John Single Malt Whisky Brilliance and Paul John Single Malt Whisky Edited in 2013. This was an attempt to enter the premium end of the market.
